A luxury German car producer was looking for a UV and weathering-resistant thermoplastic elastomer to overmould on ABS for a special interior part (exposed to sunlight) of its new sedan.

Solution

PEARLTHANE 11T85 UV , a special thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer was chosen because of its unique adhesion properties to polymers such as POM, PA, PVC or in this case ABS. Its outstanding UV and weathering-resistance, high flow properties and low density (1.16) proved to be the most cost effective solution.
PEARLTHANE TPU because of its polarity, bonds to difficult substrates making it ideal for soft touch applications.

Results

Customer achieved superior product differentiation, meeting its stringent UV light exposure and climatic testing requirements. Overmolding a soft thermoplastic elastomer, such as PEARLTHANE, onto a hard substrate provided aesthetic, ergonomic and functional value. PEARLTHANE TPUs are easy to colour and exhibit high abrasion resistance.
